Recently, Instagram has rolled out yet another update. What makes this one different? For casual users, a layout change of your feed may be just another visual element of the app to get used to. For marketers, it affects just about every aspect of your content strategy.

What’s Changed?

Instagram’s latest update has your feed and account layout shown in a longer, more rectangular shape rather than the familiar squares. These square posts still exist, but are now less convenient to use, as they don’t show up fully on your feed, prioritising more vertical posts that are more in line with a smartphone’s shape. This also allows for images to be larger on a screen.

Why does it Matter?

With this new update, a lot of previous content made to attract attention within the shape of a square doesn’t work so well anymore. Half of the post is cut off from view and its harder to see what the post is saying. Your other option is to turn it back to the square shape, but because of the update the squares are smaller, also affecting the visibility of your content.

Adapting your Content Strategy

With this new update, it’s time to think vertically. Adjust your content to fit the new layout, and experiment with different visuals and placements to see what works best for your brand image. Also consider revamping older content to align with the new format so that people can engage with it better.

This is your chance to stand out in a brand new digital landscape. Use it!
